Diboraperylene Diborinic Acid Self-Assembly on Ag(111)—Kagome Flat Band Localized States Imaged by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy

Abstract

bstract:Replacementof sp2-hybridizedcarboninpolycyclicaromatichydrocarbons(PAHs)by boronaffordselectron-deficientπ-scaffoldsdue to the vacantpz-orbitalof three-coordinateboron with the potentialfor pronouncedelectronicinteractionswith electron-richmetal surfaces.Using a diboraperylenediborinicacidderivativeas precursorand a controlledon-surfacenon-covalentsynthesisapproach,we reporton a self-assembledchiral supramolecularkagomenetworkon anAg(111)surfacestabilizedby intermolecularhydrogen-bondinginteractionsat low temperature.Scanningtunnelingmicroscopy(STM)and spectroscopy(STS)reveal a flat band at ca. 0.33eV above the Fermi levelwhich is localizedat the moleculecenter,in goodagreementwith tight-bindingmodel calculationsof flatbands characteristicfor kagomelattices
