Item Animal Genetic Resources in the IGAD Region: Regional Policy Brief on Policy and Legal Issues(The IGAD Center for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD), 2019) The IGAD Center for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD)The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is a regional economic community in the horn of Africa. Its member state comprises Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Djibouti stretching over an area of 5.2 million kmĀ². IGAD has three priority areas of focus namely a) food security and environmental protection; (b) economic cooperation, regional integration and social development; and (c) peace, security and humanitarian affairs.Item Policy Brief on Enhancing Feed Security in the IGAD Region(The IGAD Center for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD), 2018) The IGAD Center for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD)The IGAD region comprises of seven member states (Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda) of which about 60 - 70% of the landmass is Arid and Semi-arid Lands (ASALs). The ASALs are characterized by low erratic rainfall of up to 500mm per annum, cyclic devastating droughts and varying combinations of vegetative covers and soils. The majority of the 205 million people inhabiting the ASALs depend on livestock production and/or pastoralism which faces ecological constraints including climate extremes. The rangelands are the most vulnerable to climate variability, which further exacerbated by misuse and mismanagement of the land resource. Impact of climate change on range genetic resources is clearly manifested in steady deterioration of both the productivity and biological diversity coupled with dominance of undesirable and invasive plant species.Item The Roles of Public and Private Sectors in the Provision of Animal Health Services in the IGAD Region(The IGAD Center for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD), 2017) The IGAD Center for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD)The IGAD Region has a livestock population estimated at 532 million which contributes about 57% of the Agricultural Gross Domestic Product (AGDP). However, developing and protecting this huge resource from rampant animal diseases is an important public and private sector function. It requires member states to revise their animal health and welfare policies, legal frameworks, improved animal health service delivery, improved animal husbandry practices (such as supply of fodder / feeds) and instituting a sustainable mitigation measures against frequent drought. The drivers of these critical improvements include the private investors, public sector, non- governmental organizations (NGOs) as well as livestock farmers / keepers who should play their specific roles synergistically. IGAD /ICPALD did review the Policy on the Roles of Private and Public Sector in Supply and Provision of Animal Health Services in IGAD Region and developed a Regional Framework. IGAD also facilitated a workshop for key stakeholders and partner organizations to validate the Regional Framework The report has been used to extract key challenges and proposed policy recommendations for follow up and implementation by stakeholders
