    A Process Model to Enhance the Accuracy of Digital Forensic Investigations: A case of National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA-Uganda)

    The field of digital forensics has become commonplace due to the increasing prevalence of technology since the late 20th century and the inevitable relevance of this technology in the conducting of criminal activity. In traditional forensics, the evidence is generally something tangible that could identify the criminal, such as hair, blood or fingerprints. In contrast, digital forensics deals with files and data in digital form extracted from digital devices like computers, and phones, among other digital devices, meaning is derived from the fact that a computer or computerized device is the subject or object of crime. In this paper, we explore the challenges faced by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) digital forensic investigation and develop a process model that enhances the accuracy of digital forensic investigation. We adopted a mixed method approach of research involving qualitative, quantitative and experimental design. The study makes significant findings in areas of enhancement accuracy of digital forensic investigation by enumerating the processes that must be followed. As a recommendation for future work, for purposes of generalisation of the study findings, a wider study involving other security agencies such as the police should be conducted.

    Agriculture 4.0: The Promises for Sustainable Agricultural and Food Systems

    The transformative power of industry 4.0 in agricultural and food systems (Agri-food) can be attested from the explosive disruption of agricultural production infrastructures such as connected farms, new farm equipment, and connected tractors and machines which is well-known today as Agriculture 4.0 or Agri-food 4.0. The driving force behind the emergence of Agriculture 4.0 is the dire need to increase efficiency, productivity and quality in agri-food systems, and environmental protection. This has gained attention of many researchers in the recent past and thus, making Agriculture 4.0 a buzzword among the academic literature today. Despite the fact that a number of studies have covered the applications of several disruptive technologies in agri-food, the key technologies that are transforming the agri-food have been ill-defined. Therefore, the present paper aimed at identifying the key disruptive technologies and highlighting their application areas in agri-food. Massive exploratory literature search was conducted on the published papers obtained from the electronic databases including Scopus, ScienceDirect, Wiley, Emerald insight, Taylor & Francis, and Springer. The applications of 11 disruptive technologies in agri-food were analyzed based on 119 published papers. The results showed that 5 key disruptive technologies including Internet of things, Drones, Blockchain, Big Data, and Robotics are emblematic of Agriculture 4.0 epoch. The application areas of these technologies in agri-food are clearly highlighted. The present study revealed the need for extensive research to expand the application areas of the disruptive technologies in agri-food.

    An Improved Systematic Management Model for CCTV Footage in Police Criminal Investigations. A Case Study of Uganda Police Force

    Criminal investigations with CCTV footage are still having a lot of challenges being faced most especially in relation to footage management. A qualitative comparative study involving getting opinions from the experienced CCTV management team and the investigation team has been conducted to gather some information regarding the current CCTV management model. These findings were compared with the challenges reported by several media and individuals. The study revealed inadequate CCTV system audits, unauthorised footage recordings with personal devices by staff, footage leakages to social media, insufficient training for some staff, low coordination between Uganda Police Force CCTV management and stakeholders involved in road constructions, water supply constructions, billboard installations and electricity supply operations that interrupts CCTV camera operations in case of unexpected occurrences of their related activities. An improved model that involves cloud-based system audits, footage automated shutdown up-on detection of recording devices, cloud-based footage analysis and automated system backups have been incorporated into the current CCTV management model. The system computerisation procedure for the improved model have as well been outlined.

    An IOT Based Landslide Detection and Early Warning System in Hilly Areas: A Case Study of Bududa District, Eastern Uganda

    Landslides are the gravitational movements of soil, rock down slopes that can cause several damages to the environment. It is one of the most common occurring natural phenomena worldwide in causing great loss of lives and property. The study aimed at developing a Web-Based Landslide Detection and Alert System to monitor and alert people in landslide-prone areas in time. Quantitative experimental designs were employed targeting parameters like soil pore pressure, soil vibration, soil movement, rain intensity and humidity. These are sensor-monitored and their values are analysed for the system development. These values are transmitted to the monitoring section via the internet and people get notified by a text “landslide detection alert” by using GSM. Findings are expected to contribute towards disaster preparedness and eventual loss of lives and property. It is therefore recommended for use in such prone areas by the ministry and other organs of concern

    Multi-platform Process Flow Models and Algorithms for Extraction and Documentation of Digital Forensic Evidence from Mobile Devices

    The increasing need for the examination of evidence from mobile and portable gadgets increases the essential need to establish dependable measures for the investigation of these gadgets. Many differences exist while detailing the requirement for the examination of each gadget to help detectives and examiners in guaranteeing that any kind of evidence extracted/ collected from any mobile device is well documented and the outcomes can be repeatable, a reliable and well-documented investigation process must be implemented if the results of the examination are to be repeatable and defensible in courts of law. In this paper, we developed a generic process flow model for the extraction of digital evidence in mobile devices running on Android, Windows, iOS, and Blackberry operating systems. The research adopted a survey approach and extensive literature review as a means to collect data. The models developed were validated through expert opinion. Results of this work can guide solution developers in ensuring the standardization of evidence extraction tools for mobile devices.

    RFID-Based Automated Supermarket Self-Billing System

    Supermarkets are large retail stores operated on a self-service basis. They sell a range of goods from agricultural produce to electronics with tagged prices. They are coupled with numerous advantages like supporting advanced means of payment like cheques, credit cards, smart store electronic cards and mobile money, offering transportation incentives and discounts. The study aimed at coming up with an RFID-Based billing system through automation. The methods and materials used included document reviews, observational experiments, system design, implementation and testing based on current situations in the supermarket business. Findings showed that there are several weaknesses with the existing systems and the new system could ably uphold the time resource, efficiency improvement of both workers and customers, and it is secure, cost-effective, and time-saving especially from queues. The widely implemented system can improve the revenue gap and possibly rejuvenate the national or international economy to a large extent.
