    Assessment of Staking in a Climbing Bean Production System as Practiced by Smallholder Farmers in Uganda

    Adoption of climbing bean production in Eastern Africa is faced with the challenge of finding suitable staking materials which is prerequisite for high yield potential. The objective of this study was to contribute to understanding the trends in staking and staking requirements in climbing bean production and the related ecological management practices in the Ugandan highland agro-ecosystem. Sampling was done using a four-stage sampling procedure, based on 150 households selected randomly each in Kabale and Kisoro districts. Results revealed that long term maturing trees such as eucalyptus were the most commonly used types of stakes (92.7%) in Kabale. On the other hand in Kisoro, it was stems of elephant grass (62%) followed by long term maturing trees (50.6%), shrubs mainly vernonia (30%) and maize plant, maize and sorghum Stover (22%). The study revealed several challenges smallholders faced with stakes and staking such as costly stakes, breaking of stakes due to heavy pod load or becoming old, theft, multiple uses of stakes (fire wood, building), termites and the cumbersome activities (cutting, transporting). However, some farmers have not perceived staking as a problem and have developed some initiatives to cope with the shortage. Further research on the sources of stakes is recommended.

    Climbing beans in Uganda: A perspective of smallholder farmers on their determinants, associated challenges and implications for research

    In many parts of the world including Uganda climbing beans are mostly grown in highland areas where population density is high and land is limiting. The objective of this study was to contribute to understanding the current status of the factors affecting productivity of climbing beans among smallholder farmers in Uganda. Kisoro and Kabale districts in the South West were selected for the study. Primary data was collected based on 150 households selected randomly in each district in January and June, 2014. In both districts, climbing beans was ranked as a major crop enterprise for income (72.7%). Most of the interviewed households (84 and 92%) in Kisoro and Kabale respectively appreciated that the major advantage of climbing beans was suitability to areas with limited land. The study revealed practices that seem to integrate the different factors and the various components within each factor promoting ecological or interrelatedness in the production system. Lack of staking materials was ranked by the majority (Kisoro 45% and Kabale 59%) as the most important constraint. Common bean diseases (49%) and pests (45%) were highly ranked in Kisoro as compared to Kabale (13 and 22%). Labour scarcity was ranked by the majority of farmers in Kabale (49%) as compared to Kisoro (19%). Given the importance of climbing beans in the two districts, the study recommends their continued and sustainable intensification.

    Genetic variation, Heritability estimates and GXE effects on yield traits of Mesoamerican common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L) germplasm in Uganda

    Germplasm of common beans from the Mesoamerican gene pool races: Durango, Jalisco, Mesoamerica and Guatemala have highest genetic variation for the crop’s improvement. The objective was to assign 50 common bean germplasm in Uganda into its gene pool races based on analyses of population structure. Secondly, to estimate heritability and effects of genotype environment (GXE) interaction on common bean agronomic and yield traits in space and time. Sample genomic DNA was amplified in 2011 with 22 Simple sequence repeat markers (SSRs) and alleles separated using capillary electrophoresis. Field evaluations were conducted in 2010 and 2011 at NaCRRI and 2015 at CIAT – Kawanda. Multivariate analyses of SSRs data identified four subgroups within the germplasm: K4.1–K4.4, with corresponding Wrights fixation indices (FST) as 0.1829 for K4.1, 0.1585 for K4.4, 0.1579 for K4.2 and least for K4.3 at 0.0678. Gene pool race admixtures in the population (14%) were notable and attributed to gene flow. Four superior parents currently used in improving resistance to major diseases grouped as; Jalisco for MLB49-89A; Mesoamerica for MCM5001 and G2333; Durango for MEXICO 54. Heritability values for yield traits estimated using phenotypic data from above fixed parents, was above 0.81. Season and location had significant effect (P < 0.05) on numbers of: flower buds per inflorescence, pod formation and weight of 100 seeds. The findings will improve understanding of co-evolutionary relationships between bean hosts and pathogens for better disease management and will broaden the germplasm base for improving other tropical production constraints.
